New year: New system or New climate

The new year often symbolises fresh beginnings that bring hope and resolutions, but this year started with something truly remarkable: a light rain on the very first day of 2026. For me, this was a first in my lifetime.

While it felt refreshing, it also raised an important question: What does this unusual weather pattern tell us about our changing climate? Climate change is altering rainfall patterns, temperatures, and ecosystems in ways we’ve never seen before.

These shifts remind us that the time for action is now. And here’s the truth: every little action counts. Small Steps, Big Impact that matter: Reduce Energy Use: Turn off lights and unplug devices when not in use.

Cut Down Waste: Carry reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Plant Trees: Even one tree can help absorb carbon and restore balance. Choose Sustainable Transport: Walk, cycle, or use public transport. Spread Awareness: Talk about climate change and inspire others to act.

Why Start Today? The first rain of the year is a sign, a reminder that climate change is real and happening faster than we think.

Let’s make 2026 the year we commit to sustainable habits. Together, our small actions can create a ripple effect that mitigates climate change and protects our planet.
